This monumental installation of ngatu (painted tapa) is the result of a collaboration between Masterton artist Robin White and Tongan artist Ruha Fifita, working with the women of Haveluloto in Tonga.
This is the Day acknowledges and honours tradition while at the same time exploring current themes and imagery. The large scale of the ngatu and the mix of historical and contemporary iconography, patterns and references ranges from the Pacific to Western Europe and the Middle East.
