Pop Up Museum returns this year!

This popular South Wairarapa roaming exhibition features an object from the Collection that relates to each town.

Featherston Library will be first, followed by Greytown, Carterton and Martinborough.

Featherston Library will be showcasing a beautiful pair of glasses called a Lorgnette.

This pair, from the prominent Wairarapa Maunsell family, is an example of a time in which spectacles were the realm of the wealthy. The lorgnette, which comes from the French lorgner which means “to stare at”, “leer” or “have one’s eye on”, became associated with the judgement the wearer imparted as they used the lorgnette to inspect an item, text, or person.

This pair are relatively simply in design, but have a green ribbon, that would have gone around the wearer’s wrist, and a decorative painted papier-mâché bead to make them more fashionable.

Public Programmes accompany this exhibition, details TBC.
