Xiao Ma is China's first countertenor. Thanks to an extraordinary ability to move between male and mezzo-soprano registers his repertoire ranges from baroque arias through to chinese folk and pop music.
Until now rarely heard outside of China, Xiao Ma's visit to New Zealand marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between New Zealand and China and is supported by the Confucius Institute at Victoria University of Wellington, Asia NZ Foundation, the Chinese Ministry of Culture and the Chinese Embassy.
Chinese‐born Gao Ping, will support Xiao Ma and is both a pianist and outstanding composer. His works have been commissioned, played and recorded by leading international soloists and ensembles, he has performed to acclaim all over the world. In 2008, Gao Ping premiered his Piano Concerto with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Ken Young. Dr Gao lectures in composition at the University of Canterbury.
